Our CEO & Founder
Updated: Jun 25, 2020
We wanted to share some information about our team through our blog as we prepare to open our stores. We thought, what better place to start than telling you a bit about our CEO and Founder, Ranny Shibley.
Where were you born and raised?
I was born and raised in Calgary and have lived here my whole life.
Tell us about your family.
My parents immigrated to Calgary from Lebanon in the late 70's and have been here ever since. I married my beautiful wife, Lana, in 2011 and we now have three amazing children, Mina, Milan and Malik.
When you aren’t working hard at GRC, what do you enjoy doing?
When I'm not working, I enjoy being present with Lana and the kids. In the summertime, I'm my kids' soccer coach (yes, I coach three teams) and in the winter, I'm helping them in the pool or on the ice. Other than that, I enjoy playing rec hockey, squash but above all, I really love travelling and food! There is nothing better than experiencing a new city, country or cuisine!
Before you founded GRC, what did you do for work?
I was a venture capitalist from 2015 to before I started Green Rock and before 2015 I ran my family's private oil and gas company that focused on exploration and production in Western Canada.
We heard a rumour that you love philanthropic work. Tell us more!
13 years ago, I started my own foundation called 4 The Kids Foundation (4TKF). 4TKF sponsors local and international underprivileged children in Alberta, Mexico, Columbia and Mozambique. We have with nutrition programs, clothing, education, hygiene and other basic necessities to help these amazing kids have an increased quality of life. I also do some fundraising for the MS Society and have been a top fundraiser for our local chapter for the past decade.
Will you continue your pursuit of Philanthropy with GRC?
Absolutely! Giving back and helping the community is very important to me and it's something I want to continue to pursue corporately. Right now, regulations are strict in this industry, but we will always figure out a way to give back in some capacity.
Why did you choose to work in the Canadian Cannabis Industry?
When the retail segment of the industry first started, it was chaos. I saw people tying less than ideal spaces at outrageous rents and spending ridiculous amounts of money on unnecessary items. I quickly realized that there was an opportunity to break into the industry efficiently without breaking the bank.
What are you most excited about at Green Rock Cannabis?
Our brand concept. I feel that customers will come into our stores and have an experience they won't receive anywhere else. Everything from our menus, store design and staff will make you feel welcomed and comfortable.
What do you look for in a team?
Our team needs to be fun and energetic. They need to lift each other up and always lend a helping hand. I always want to surround myself with positive people who are willing to learn, but who I can also learn from.
What advice do you have for our future GRC leaders?
In a world of darkness, look for the light. Always be your self!
